I hope Toyota keeps the MR2 name for the mid-engine car they are developing.

I think there's also a market for a new Celica. They can have FWD 1.5T Hybrid as the standard model, with e-AWD as an option. Then offer a GR Celica that has AWD, manual, and 2.0T. Offer the vehicle in both 2 and 4 door coupe variants. Slot it in between the Corolla and Camry, and give it some retro looks that harken back to the days of the GT-FOUR/All-Trac.

With SUVs and pickups becoming increasingly expensive, we could see a resurgence of fun cars on the market. Even Ford is thinking about offering a small RWD sedan.

The Carina ED was built on the FWD Celica platform. But before that there was a RWD model in the early 1980s, the Celica Camry; it was the first use of the Camry name.

I think it's just going to be a cleaned up version of the GR Yaris mid-engine development mule

GR MR2 has entered next stage of development abandoning the GR Yaris shell. now using a chopped up LC500 panels and GR Yaris headlights/taillights.

I've been wondering if going for a much more complex transverse mid-engine AWD layout causes problems in development. This program could have been much smoother if they went for a simple transverse MR layout. With "only" 400PS it's not that traction limited, so maybe they don't want to be associated with the negative image the old MR2s. A 400PS RWD version could be a spiritual successor to the 718 GTS 4.0 Porsche refuses to make.
