Audi’s supercar, the legendary R8, was overdue for an update. Since it shares its drivetrain and chassis with the Lamborghini Gallardo (a car that is no longer produced), we knew that the R8 was about to be modernized. After being treated to a slew of spy shots, we can now see exactly what the sports car will look like.
At first glance, the 2015 R8 is not exactly revolutionary; its lines may be more angular, its headlights longer and the car’s iconic side blades might now be two pieces of trim, but we can easily recognize the R8.
Most of the changes have occurred under the sheet metal, though: the new R8 is 50 kg lighter than the outgoing model, its aluminium chassis is 40% more rigid and the quattro all-wheel drive system has been rethought. In normal driving, it sends 100% of the torque to the rear wheels, but it can transfer all power to the front wheels if it needs to.

For the drivetrain, Audi chose to offer the R8 with a 5.2-litre V10 engine; the V8 has been phased out. Two versions are available; the base model outputs 540 horsepower, while the V10 Plus model boasts 610 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. In its most powerful configuration, the R8 can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and hit 330 km/h.
Electric car lovers will also be happy to hear that the R8 e-tron will now be available. The car will have a range of 450 km on a full charge, which should take less than 2 hours. With its 462 horsepower and 679 pound-feet of torque, the e-tron should get to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.
We expect to see both versions of the 2015 R8 at the Geneva International Motor Show.

I assume it's another car that translates better in person than pics. Reading around most seem disappointed.

Personally was never a fan of the R8 but this one is ok. Styling is a little more chiseled and defined, and the V10 should sound nice while taking it to 60mph in 3 secs!

Weird design with the vertical lines under the headlights, looks like the R8 is angry and crying.

Rest of the body just looks ordinary, at least from the image above.

Like many others, I am sort of underwhelmed. I hope it looks better in person.

Audi R8 Green Hell commemorates victories at the Nürburgring

Audi has announced a new, limited-run R8 model dubbed "Green Hell" to commemorate its success on a little piece of country road in Germany called the Nürburgring. Perhaps you've heard of it?

While 'Ring fever has subsided over the past decade or so, its nickname is known to enthusiasts worldwide. Audi is tapping into that collective reverence with a 50-unit run of the new special edition based on its R8 V10 Performance variant to mark Audi Sport's five 24 Hours of the Nürburgring victories with the R8 LMS race car dating back to 2012.

"We are synonymous with high performance — in both series production and motorsport," said Audi Sport boss Julius Seebach in the R8 Green Hell's official announcement. "The R8 road sports car and the R8 LMS racing car were designed and developed jointly; around half of their parts are identical. The R8 Green Hell edition model draws on the proximity to motorsport, while also paying tribute to our legendary victories on the Nürburgring."

A "Green Hell" edition had better be green, right? The default finish for the package is Tioman, as pictured here, but Audi will sell you one in Ibis white, Daytona gray or Mythos black, if you really insist on being contrarian. Regardless of color choice, you'll get the hood, a-pillars, roof and the rear end in matte black, doors with your car's serial number designed to mimic racing livery, the "Green Hell R8" logo on each side "blade" and a gloss black windshield surround.

Inside, there are more "Green Hell" logos just about everywhere, along with a green contrast-stitching theme throughout all of the soft-touch interior trim elements. Underneath, it's a run-of-the-mill, 611-horsepower R8 V10 Performance, if you can even say such a thing.

Audi says the R8 Green Hell will go for 233,949.59 euros, or about $275,000 at the time of publication. Nothing run-of-the-mill about that.
