2016 Lexus IS 200t gets official

2016-lexus-is-200t-european-spec_100516505_l.jpg

With the arrival of its new NX crossover last year, Lexus joined the wave of automakers introducing downsized turbocharged engines to help meet tough new fuel economy and emissions regulations. Around the same time as the arrival of the turbocharged NX, badged an NX 200t, we discovered that Lexus had registered the trademark “IS 200t”, suggesting that the IS small sports sedan was next in line to receive the turbo treatment.

Today, Lexus pulled the covers off the IS 200t, though the automaker is yet to confirm the car for the United States. We suspect it will be introduced here for the 2016 model year, as a replacement for the IS 250. That’s because the IS 200t’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the same one fitted to the NX 200t, produces substantially more power and torque than the gutless V-6 of the IS 250, and it should prove more economical too.

This European-spec IS 200t is rated at 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and in the relatively lenient European combined cycle it returns about 33 mpg. In the U.S., we suspect the IS 200t will match the 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of the NX 200t, and its EPA-rated fuel economy should better the 24 mpg combined for the IS 250, which only musters up 204 hp and 185 lb-ft.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard on the IS 200t, and drive goes to the rear wheels only. All-wheel drive may be offered as an option here in the U.S., though. Lexus claims the IS 200t will accelerate from 0-62 mph in 7.0 seconds and reach a top speed of approximately 143 mph.

The car goes on sale in Europe towards the end of the year. We’ll update the story once specifications and availability for the U.S. are confirmed.

Finally! But there are a couple of questions:
-price
-since Lexus Europe announced the 200t would the 2.0l turbo be available here in the states, or where its like the RX and the 2.0l turbo is only available outside the US.
- another is how long would it be till lexus stops selling the 2.5?

The left side is composed of red leds = fog lamp. Has always been there on European versions ;)

Good Find, Gecko. :)

I myself prefer V6s for refinement (and I formerly had an IS300, myself, with a super-refined 3.0L in-line six). But, I guess the more conservative guys like me might as well accept the fact that CAFE rules and smaller engine compartments are dictating the use of more and more in-line turbo 4s. Like it or not, it's the wave of the future, especially in 2-liter displacement, which seems to be an increasingly common size. And, to be fair and objective, there are some excellent turbo 4s on the market.....VW/Audi, especially, has had a 2.0T I've liked for years. But, with turbos, it also means more expensive full-synthetic oil and oil-changes. Some turbos, even with good service and regular oil changes, still don't last the life of the engine from the stresses and heat they produce....though modern turbo engineering and improvements in lubrication have done a good job of extending their available life.

To add to above.

IS 350 AWD in Canada announced with the carryover 3.5L V6 306 hp, 277 lb-ft torque same as before.

So the most interesting question to me is not so much the 200t which we expected, but the IS 300's 3.5L V6. Is it a detuned version of the 2GR-FSE ?

(TORONTO, ON – June 26, 2015) Get behind the wheel: The Lexus IS luxury sport sedan is the innovative sedan that delivers complete driving enjoyment. New for 2016, the Lexus IS is offered in an all-new line-up, with new engines and a whole lot more.

“From the moment you touch the throttle in the Lexus IS, you’ll know: This is it,” said Cyril Dimitris, Director, Lexus Canada. “When we introduced the current generation IS in 2014 it established a new benchmark for bold styling and track-proven dynamics that deliver maximum driving. Now, we’re making the IS even better, with more standard features and a fresh line-up of available upgrade packages.”

New for 2016:

  • Lexus introduces the IS 200t to the lineup, featuring a powerful and efficient turbo-charged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. First used on the Lexus NX, this turbo has been optimized for the RWD IS 200t. CorradoMR2, thanks for the post.

It is a bit confusing just like what Gecko said --- so at least for Canada, we have IS200t RWD and IS300 AWD which are new for 2016MY. But IS300 and IS350 both use 3.5L V6. I think the chance of detuned 2GR-FSE is very high. Probably because of the design of the AWD components, they still couldn't fit a 8 speed in the AWD version but they have to give something to replace IS250 AWD.

The auto-sensing wiper that is now standard with F-Sport model which is not a surprise. But the lack of park sensors, LED headlamp and memory seats for F-Sport models in 2016 is disappointing. Just couldn't understand the more popular F-Sport IS models are still lacking in terms of equipment and upgrade options.

Canada has loaded IS350 F-Sport model ...

As to IS300, I didnt expect them to use 3.5l engine .... so what are the changes, did they take out D4S? Something significant had to give for so much lower numbers.

However, 3.5l detuned is way, way better than IS250 AWD.

In my area (D.C. suburbs), the IS250AWD sells like hotcakes (better than the RWD version)...though, admittedly, mostly by people not particularly interested in power or performance.
