2nd best month, and year, for Lexus ever. Lexus 41k, Mercedes and BMW 32k each.
Best year for Lexus NX and RX ever, and both lead their class, so that speaks volumes about Lexus' new aggressive styling appeal.
The LS is gonna be a huge hit so the only question is what is Lexus going to do with the UX/CT situation?

BMW decided they weren't in the sales race this year, so they did not stuff the registration stats with phony sales, like they usually do in Q4.
They were almost 20k behind Lexus in 2016. Their SUV division isn't nearly as strong and well sorted out as Lexus.

I am so happy that the body-on-frame LX 570 performed so well. The GX did better than most. Imagine a thorough redesign... although I do not want unibody SUVs!

25% increase in sales of the NX YTD vs 2015, wow! I suspect though the limit in capacity last year capped its sales.

I won't beat the dead horse again, but if Lexus had a more fuel efficient and powerful engine offering over the 2GR-FSE, I bet car sales would be notably better. The new rumored 3L Turbo V6 cannot come soon enough!

Given the trends, even if there were new engines now, the buyer traffic coming into the showrooms are more interested in the SUVs more than anything else (OK, probably the ES lol). Even the GSF did little for GS sales this past year.

I won't beat the dead horse again, but if Lexus had a more fuel efficient and powerful engine offering over the 2GR-FSE, I bet car sales would be notably better. The new rumored 3L Turbo V6 cannot come soon enough!

V6 Diesel too.

CRV squeaked past the Rav4, but it was close. Sienna with a very narrow win over the Caravan!

112k 4Runners and 191k Highlanders... wow.

Audi sold over 200k last year. It is absolutely stunning to see their rise in the USA the past ten years. Truly a great case study in turning things around in a market you floundered in. Obviously their products are tons better which of course is the key, along with marketing, dealership group etc...

New A4 was 5th in sales last month.

True, but it was also stunning to see what Hyundai and Kia accomplished 10-15 years ago. Audi, to a large extent, simply followed in their footsteps by making better products, marketing them better, and presenting a better public image.....until the diesel-scandal, of course. But, even than, that has hurt VW more than Audi, because Audi doesn't sell as many American-market diesels as VW.

Audi did not follow in their footsteps. Audi did it with new style, a flagship (R8), technology, luxury and a tremendous marketing campaign. Hyundai/Kia did use style (they did hire Audi's past designer) but also with aggressive sales tactics and warranty.

Then today Audi continues to make sale records each month (now going on 72 months) and the same can't be said for Hyundai/Kia.

This is not taking away from the latter, obviously they have done one hell of a job turning things around the past 8 or so years.

Cadillac is celebrating its best global sales year in 30 years
http://media.cadillac.com/media/us/.../news/us/en/2017/jan/0105-cadillac-sales.html

Cadillac sold 37,310 vehicles globally in December, bringing its total for 2016 to 308,692 — the most since 1986. The year-end total marked an increase of 11.1 percent from the previous year.

In December 2016, the seventh consecutive month of double-digit percentage increases for Cadillac, global sales rose 15.5 percent over December 2015. The all-new XT5 had its largest sales since launch. Cadillac sales in the midsize luxury crossover category — the industry’s strongest segment — grew 29.1 percent in December. Escalade sales rose 21.2 percent in December and 8.95 percent for the year. The XTS luxury sedan saw sales increase 14.7 percent for the month and 15.8 percent for the year.

Growth in Cadillac’s top three regional markets drove the overall increase in December. Sales in the U.S. grew 3.2 percent, while Cadillac completed its record year in China with a 45.4 percent increase. Sales in Canada rose 23.1 percent.

“It was a stunning year for Cadillac’s global growth in 2016,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “Drawing more customers than any year in the past 30 is an excellent springboard for the robust product offensive from Cadillac in the coming years. While growing the business significantly and attracting a youthful and affluent demographic, we continue to elevate the aspirational character of the brand. We see this in a very rich model mix, with discerning customers opting for top models with very high specifications, driving up average transaction prices in the process."

Cadillac’s growth included a continuation in its trend of attaining higher brand prestige alongside volume growth. The brand’s average transaction prices in the U.S. market reached $53,796 per unit (according to Power Information Network.)

I was surprised that the Rogue sold so many last month. Nissan had a real fire sale...it did its job for sure, it sold better than the RAV, CR-V and Camry, of which its sales really waned for December, so I wonder what the all new MY18 will do if anything to keep sales leveled.

Audi did not follow in their footsteps. Audi did it with new style, a flagship (R8), technology, luxury and a tremendous marketing campaign.

The Genesis G90, though, a true flagship, is now competing with the A8.

Hyundai/Kia did use style (they did hire Audi's past designer)

There are strong hints of Audi styling in the new Genesis G90's interior. That probably explains it.

Then today Audi continues to make sale records each month (now going on 72 months)

I agree, Mike...but would also like to point out that it flies in the face of many of the doomsday predictions made from the VW/Audi scandals.

This is not taking away from the latter, obviously they have done one hell of a job turning things around the past 8 or so years.

Actually, it started around 2000 or so. In fact, the first inkling I got of a newer, better Hyundai that wasn't selling junk any more came as far back as 1997, when the 1Gen Tiburon sport-coupe was released. That was arguably the first brand-new Hyundai product I sampled that did not rattle, squeak, have loose parts, or otherwise feel and drive like a poorly-asssembled tin can. In fact, I myself owned and drove a 1995 Toyota Celica at that time, and I thought the new Tiburon was a good competitor.

BTW, Mike...stay safe if you are in Atlanta tonight. Looks like a major winter storm for much of the SE.
