http://www.autonews.com/article/201...ta-deliveries-edge-up-1-5-tacoma-sales-strong
Deliveries edge up 1.5%; Tacoma sales strong

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. said September sales rose 1.5 percent to 197,260 vehicles, with strong light-truck volume -- led by the Tacoma -- offsetting weak car demand.

Toyota Division sales rose 2.4 percent to 170,719 as its car sales fell 7.7 percent to 81,555 and truck sales gained 14 percent to 89,164. Scion vehicles were merged into the Toyota badge beginning in August.

“Industry sales remain in line with last year’s record levels,” said Bill Fay, general manager of Toyota Division, in a statement.

Lexus, Toyota’s luxury brand, posted a 2 percent increase in sales, to 25,801 vehicles. Car sales slid 20 percent to 10,097 while truck sales rose 24 percent to 15,704.

Sales of the Corolla compact car were the lone bright spot for Toyota Division cars, increasing 15 percent to 32,272. Deliveries of the Camry midsize sedan were down 11 percent to 30,707, and sales of the Prius hybrid slid 23 percent to 12,475.

The brand’s pickup sales jumped 28 percent to 25,230, driven by the Tacoma, which was up 35 percent to 15,723. Tacoma sales had been down for four consecutive months before September because of short supply; however, recent investments in production have allowed Toyota to catch up with demand, Fay said in a call with reporters. Starting in late 2017, the automaker will invest $150 million in its Tijuana, Mexico, plant to increase its output of Tacoma trucks by 60,000 annually.

“We’re largely a product of what we’re able to build,” Fay said.

Toyota-badged crossovers and SUVs climbed 13 percent to 54,665 in September, with strong performances by the Highlander, up 21 percent to 14,937, and 4Runner, up 21 percent to 9,058. Sienna minivan sales fell 12 percent to 9,269, and Sequoia SUV sales dropped 21 percent to 907.

Lexus sales

Lexus car sales were down at least 15 percent for almost every model, with sales of the brand’s top-selling ES down 13 percent to 4,543. GS sales dropped 33 percent to 1,066.

Despite slow car sales, Lexus trucks posted gains of at least 10 percent for each model. NX sales rose 52 percent to 4,729, and RX sales increased 11 percent to 8,605.

“Thanks to improved availability, we expect this record pace to continue through the final quarter,” said Jeff Bracken, Lexus general manager, in a statement.

The US economy is crap, so car sales are falling, but if you have something really great, you'll move it. I expect the new LS to take a nice chunk of share from the 7 and S. They'll be day-old eggs in comparison.

What Lexus needs is a large Mercedes GLS competitor, a large unibody for those who don't want the GX. I'd redesign the GX in two years and they have the TX coming. Lexus' crossovers will weather any sales storm.

The Lexus NX is now only about 600 units from taking class lead from the Acura RDX

It looks like the entire Lexus lineup is due for a redesign for the 2018 model year!

And I was just reading about GS F prices, now as much as $20K off MSRP. Sucks for those who bought them close to MSRP earlier this year.

It's more like 8-10k... 20k seems to be a rare anomaly....

Mind you I just was offered 20k off a CLS 63S and BMW i8... These discounts are not limited to Lexus

September sales: industry remains turbulent as Q3 comes to a close

September was yet another messy month for the U.S. auto industry. We're starting off today's coverage with some mixed results.

Mazda took yet another hit, and is now on pace to finish down by as much as 8 percent for the year. Volkswagen remains down as well, dropping nearly 8 percent vs. September a year ago and 12.5 percent for 2016. Meanwhile, Audi's consecutive sales streak continues unabated.
GM's September was less exciting. Overall, the automaker finished down roughly a half a percent. Chevrolet was essentially flat while Buick finished up more than 14 percent. GMC continues to slide toward pre-2015 numbers.

Nissan, on the other hand, managed to pull off growth in both brands. Honda's overall numbers were up on a strong performance from the core brand, but luxury division Acura continues to slump.

Toyota's core brand was up a bit for the month, but Scion's two-minute drill has finally collapsed and Lexus remains off slightly.

For September, Lexus moved 25,801 units--a 2 percent increase--and BMW sold 25,389--a 4.6 percent drop. Despite being relative flat YTD, Mercedes-Benz blew both BMW and Lexus out of the water with more than 29,000 sales, taking the crown for the month and staying squarely in the lead for 2016.

The new Mercedes GLC is a huge hit, it was #1 in sales in the small SUV class passing the Q5, NX and RDX. Mercedes has a pretty fresh lineup and more SUVs than ever.

The Camaro actually outsold the Mustang, that is pretty rare at this point. Note the Challenger sells very well for an older big coupe.

The Camaro actually outsold the Mustang,

I'd bet the farm that's because of the publicity that the new Camaro is getting from its Cadillac ATS-sourced chassis. Camaro buyers know a good deal when they see it. (Now, seeing OUT of it may be another matter LOL):yum

Note the Challenger sells very well for an older big coupe.
That's probably because it does the retro styling better than either Mustang or Camaro.....and, of course, the classic pastel colors. A lot of Baby-Boomers are still trying to re-live their youth. ;)

GM Tripled Chevrolet Camaro Incentives In September, Made Small Dent In Bulging Inventory

The narrow victory scored by the Chevrolet Camaro in America’s pony car sales race in September 2016 was the result of General Motors finally pricing the Camaro in line with the Ford Mustang.

But General Motors still has more than four months of Camaro supply as dealers approach a much slower buying season for sports cars in general; as the auto industry at large shows signs of a gradual and modest slowdown.

Year-over-year, U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Camaro jumped 25 percent in September 2016. Compared with August, month-to-month volume rose 17 percent. To produce such gains, GM had to triple the average price cut on Camaros.

Heading into September, Automotive News said General Motors had a 139-day supply of Camaros, or roughly 30,000 units. One month later, Cars.com shows that GM still has 30,000 Camaros in stock, as the 6,577 sales reported were apparently replaced by approximately 6,500 more Camaros. The market has 1.4 million cars in inventory, which equals 61 days of supply.

Heading into September, FCA had a 90-day supply of Challengers, about 18,000 cars, and sold 5,698 Challengers. After Ford possessed 71 days of Mustang supply at the beginning of September (or 23,000 cars), Mustang sales plunged 32 percent to 6,429 units during the month of September.

That Mustang sales dive came as Ford decreased the average incentive per Mustang from $3,000 in August to $2,700 in September.

GM, meanwhile, tripled the incentive spend on Camaros from roughly $1,100 per Camaro in August — evidently not enough to overcome the car’s built-in demerits — to $3,300 in September.

Asked about the Camaro’s incentives and inventory, GM spokesperson Jim Cain (no relation) told TTAC this morning, “The Camaro is a great car. It’s light years ahead of the Mustang on so many levels, starting with performance and technology.”

Getting closer to the heart of the matter, Cain says, “If you bought one at the end of the 2016 model year, you got a great deal.”

As it turns out, offering “a great deal,” also known as positioning the previously overpriced Camaro more directly in line with its direct competition, resulted in slightly superior sales for the Chevrolet in September.

And GM isn’t done with deal-making. Beginning October 1 and extending through January 3, 2017, a GM Holiday Sales Event in conjunction with Costco will net members supplier pricing atop “most currently available GM incentives,” plus either $300 or $700 Costco cash cards depending on membership level. The deals are available on 2016 and 2017 models and are clearly necessary if GM is to clear out excessive inventory of Cascadas, Encores, CTSs, Camaros, Corvettes, and full-size pickups.

Sans incentives, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro had a base price $1,650 higher than the 2016 Mustang. For model year 2017, the Camaro’s base price is $1,780 higher than the Mustang’s.

Well, that's why I said that many of what Camaro sales there actually are probably come from the publicity given it from the ATS-based chassis......and, yes, plus some of the incentives that GM often does (Thanks, I had momentarily forgotten about some of those incentives) :). I also mentioned that seeing OUT of the Camaro can also be a problem.....that may (?) be a deal-breaker for at least some potential buyers.

There are a number of things about the Camaro I like, and are worth looking at, but, personally, I probably wouldn't buy one.....poor winter traction, too low a stance to the ground, too firm-riding, the aforementioned poor visibility, too hard to get in and out of with my not-so-young back and knees.

Anyone have the individual numbers the GSF or RCF? I'm just wondering how Lexus is doing with those...?
