hmm, my initial reaction is why all the bulky hardware when Tesla looks sleek. But then I think about the real downer where in 10 years we won't be driving new cars anymore. :sob:

When appropriately equipped, current Lexus vehicles can do the same as Tesla vehicles without all the bulk. However, that is basic technology. The extra heft you see is intended to not only gather data but also to make vehicles entirely autonomous. Current technology struggles in slightly poor weather or road conditions. For example, fully autonomous vehicles should not be bumping into a vehicle that is stuck on the left shoulder, and a Tesla had done just that among many other things.
