April 2016 Sales Chart

TORRANCE, Calif. (May 3, 2016) – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported April 2016 sales of 211,125 units, an increase of 3.8 percent from April 2015 on a volume basis. With one more selling day in April 2016 compared to April 2015, sales were flat (zero percent) on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis.

Toyota division posted April 2016 sales of 186,243 units, up 5.0 percent on a volume basis and 1.1 percent on a DSR basis.

"The industry had its strongest April in more than 10 years, possibly a best-ever month." said Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. "Toyota division enjoyed its sixth consecutive month of best-ever light truck sales, helped by record Highlander, RAV4 and 4Runner sales."

Lexus posted sales of 24,882 units, down 3.8 percent on a volume basis and 7.4 percent on a DSR basis.

“Not surprisingly, the industry’s strong sales results in April are powered by consumer demand for luxury utility vehicles, said Jeff Bracken Lexus group vice president and general manager. “On the heels of four consecutive best-ever sales months for Lexus’ LUV and crossover models, we feel confident that our range of models, especially the RX and NX, are very well positioned to meet the shifting consumer demand in the luxury market.”

April 2016 Highlights:
  • Camry posts sales of more than 34,000 units
  • Corolla posts sales of 32,111 units
  • Toyota division posts record April for light truck sales; up almost 13 percent for the month
  • RAV4 sales rose 31.6 percent; a best-ever April

Couple of quick notes I know not all the numbers are in yet but the GS just got killed by the 5 series this month...is that normal? Also, Is sales seem extremely weak. Lastly NX outsold by almost 2000 for the RDX...is the RDX that good? I had to go to Acura just now to look at the RDX the outside of the NX looks a 1000 times better. Am I missing something about the RDX? Strong month by RX would like to see it hit 10,000 units tho... Overall Lexus sales still look good and ES still doing its job well. New LS anytime soon would help...

The RX is up 24%, but the car lineup is down across the board.

Essentially, the RDX is basically a 2004 RX with an Acura beak and we all know that RX sold very well as it was very vanilla and vanilla sells. Acura has replicated Lexus formula from literally over ten years ago and its doing well for them as its perfect for their loyal fanbase. In addition its just much easier to sell a SUV compared to a sedan.

As for the GS, a couple of things, incentives were weak and in all honestly I think that bold new full spindle might be a bit to aggressive for most, especially since the sides and rear are not nearly as adventurous. The 5 series is vanilla and vanilla sells and BMW 5 series is arguably best in class.

I just fail to see how Lexus could ever stomach getting rid of the GX... it continuously sells at a steady pace (nearly double that of the heavily invested GS!) Like you said, consumers want their SUVs. With a solid redesign I think Lexus could continue to make a lot off the GX.

If Lexus' product planning wasn't so poor lately, they'd have a new or heavily updated GX heading into dealers late this summer. I digress...

Totally agree. My take, sell them until you can't sell them anymore :D. That is what Benz is doing with the G-wagon, they just refine it over and over and people want it. Many people want the image and the capability of a BOF.

Looking at recent history, it will get ANOTHER facelift! :D

Agree as well. And, even though the GX is the only one of Lexus' 4 current crossovers and SUVs to show a sales decline (and not a big one, at that), its Toyota-branded 4Runner sibling showed the 2nd-largest sales percentage increase vs last year, exceeded only by the Land Cruiser. I'd say that, CAFE notwithstanding, this bodes well for Toyota and Lexus continuing with their BOF SUVs.

I was just about to mention the 4Runner. It's insane how well the refreshed version of that truck is doing. We have a 2015 Limited- while there are some things that could be improved upon, its an all around solid and well rounded truck. I feel the same about the GX.

Do you think Lexus will begin to shift greater attention to the growing CUV/SUV market like their German rivals based on these sales trends?

I think they have no choice, given the way market and sales trends are going. Their recent RX L and UX trademarks certainly hint at plans to enter both ends of the luxury crossover market.

On the other hand, they won't altogether ignore the car segment, what with the upcoming LC and next-gen LS launches. And the rapidly-declining CT is also due for a new generation within the next year or 2, tops.

It's really hard to say what to expect from the GX...

At this point, a refresh seems like an easy fix, but you'd have to assume that a refresh would include Lexus' newest safety systems, which allegedly the GX and 4Runner won't have by the end of 2017. That timing is problematic for this theory.

A full on redesign is now due, but I'm not sure that Toyota/Lexus projected a 2017/2018 redesign 2-3 years ago when gas was still $3.50 a gallon and it seemed like BOF was dead.

For all intents and purposes, Lexus could well feel like the RX L will take over where the GX is leaving off.

GX could move to GA-L in the future.

I think Lexus is making a huge mistake by letting the GX go on unattended like this, but I'll just choose not to worry about it.

Nobody wants sedans or coupes, lackluster powertrains, GS front fascia is morbid looking, RC interior needs a refresh...
IMO, I think that the area that the head lights are on the RC F(but not on the RC) seem awkwardly indented, and looks weird next to the bulging spindle grille.
2015-Lexus-RC-F-Headlight-01.jpg

I'm hoping that will be fixed even though I honestly would buy it either way if I had the money. Also, LF-C2 style taillights and a convertible would be awesome.
