Lexus CT F SPORT Owner Blog: Saying Goodbye

Last month, I returned my 2014 Lexus CT 200h F SPORT to the dealership after three years of exceptional service. A trustworthy companion through thick and thin, I drove the hybrid hatchback across the country and together we navigated the daily grind with ease.

Now to say goodbye.

After driving a 1994 LS 400 for seven years, I was ready to experience new Lexus car ownership. It was a battle between the CT and the IS 250, with the CT eventually winning out due to the hybrid tech and my absolute disdain of the Lexus 2.5L V6 engine.

Lexus CT Mountains

It’s tough to say the CT was the practical choice — we are talking about a luxury car, after all. Even so, the fuel economy and the bulletproof reliability was a huge consideration in choosing a car I would share with my wife Karissa.

And MY WORD, the CT was reliable. In the three years I drove the car, only two things happened — the USB port stopped working, and the trunk latch broke. Both were fixed without drama at my local dealership. Not a single mechanical issue, just simple wear and tear that happens with anything.

Perhaps even more impressive was the gas consumption — I finished up with 70,109 kms while averaging 5.3L/100km (that’s 43,563 miles and 44.3 mpg for you Americans). This is the one aspect of the CT that has wrecked all other luxury cars for me — outside of pure-electric cars, there’s nothing out there that compares with this kind of fuel economy.

My hands-down best moment in the CT 200h? The time I interviewed my daughter Pepper about the car:

The CT 200h was such a huge hit in the household that when we needed a second car, we stayed in the family — last August, we added a 2008 Barcelona Red Metallic Toyota Prius to the driveway.

To no one’s surprise, it was around this time that the glow around the CT began to fade. The F SPORT suspension was starting to wear on me, especially in the winter months, and the addition of the Prius meant we had two cars heavy with economy and light on fun. The fact that I could park the Prius anywhere without worry meant the CT stayed parked at home more often than not.

(As a matter of course, this was totally a good thing — two people driving the same car meant we were perilously close to our allotted mileage on the lease.)

Lexus CT in the Snow

In the end, my Ultra White Lexus CT 200h was the very definition of a perfect car. I can recommend it without reservation. The smartest move would have been buying out the lease and driving that little hatchback for the next ten years. But I’m ready for something with flaws, I want more character. I want something new.

And that’s what I got.

A very special thank you to OpenRoad Lexus in British Columbia for making the CT 200h (and my next car) possible. They are the flagship sponsor of Lexus Enthusiast, and I’m thrilled to have their support.

The photos are spectacular, the cars look stunning! The very last photo has an amazing contrast. The next photo should be with the entire lineup in Obsidian, and yes the LFA and IS F are included.

It's time for me to come clean -- I have a phobia. Not only that, I'm willing to bet most of you reading this suffer from the very same irrational fear.

I feel the same. I always park in an "end" space so that I can put enough distance between mine and the next vehicle ... or ... I park a long distance from all the other vehicles in the lot. I don't mind the walk, but passengers often do. They just don't understand it is part of the price you pay for driving a nice vehicle you want to protect.
I do the same as you Kevin and RAL. It just stinks that some have no respect for other's property.
I'm also paranoid about parking. Besides looking for remote spots in the parking lot, I also like parking next to other luxury cars, figuring they would respect mine. This must be the case for other luxury car owners because I have often come back to where I parked and have found something like a BMW or Porsche next to my car.
whats annoying is when you park far from other cars but out off all the parking spots, someone pulls up right next to you like really...
And there's always the extra thrasher car for parking in places where you know it's going to be crappy...
In all honesty I park all the way at the end where nobody wants to go. If I spot another Lexus in close proximity to the store I'll park beside it, I think other car brand owners will scratch my car so I trust Lexus owners only...lol. Wherever I park really far and someone parks beside me it pisses me off, I inspect my car THOROUGHLY before I leave!

Great minds think alike! I too do the same thing for shopping malls.

These are my preferred spots:
Find a remote spot far away from entrance and next to a concrete column so 50% less chance of getting hit as there is only one car next to me
Park next to luxury cars
Avoid parking next to P platers and old bombs.

Although my camry is 10 years old I bought it new and it still looks newish and has some new car smell inside.
It’s ground hog day when it comes to my car. Over the years my front fender has been scratched 4 times by idiots at the mall who can’t park or hoons who cut corners and scrape my car. After each incident my car was then hit 3 times by 3 P platers in low speed accidents. So I get a new front fender from the insurance but months later it gets scratched again.
Drives me nuts even though it’s only a camry.

When I buy a Lexus I don’t think I’ll drive it to a public car park or the mall. I’ll keep my camry for that!
I agree with everyone - its harder to find the 'right spot' then choosing where to go first in a mall. One interesting note, a least all of us parking in the remote spots are receiving a benefit - a little extra exercise. In our area you see a lot of vehicles with bumper protectors - now we need side body protectors. I.m glad to see so many others suffering from PPP (paint protection paranoia). Where are you going to park your new LC500? The moon. KREW, thanks for coming clean.
I truly understand. It sucks to park in a full parking lot. I do tend to park further away and very conscious to what vehicle I park next to. It would be nice if parking lots separated luxury cars in their own spot but that would be like valet and there is no way I would let the valet drive my car...

I hate parking spots. I'm like all of you where I'm conscious about the impacts (literally) as I drive into a parking area.

Factors I consider when parking in public spots.

1. Farthest available parking spot from the building/venue.
2. Last parking spot in the row.
3. Avoidance of parking beside a two-door car due to increased risk from the longer door, unless it's a premium car.
4. Avoidance of "family vehicles" I see a car or booster seats in the back seats = increased chances of kids or parents swinging open doors, or jackets, purchases, etc hitting the car.
5. Avoidance of any older car, especially a beater.
6. Avoidance near a cart return, sidewalk, or other areas where people dump their carts.
7. Avoidance of a low point spot where winds and gravity can have a cart roll down into the car.

In short, despite these avoidance efforts, I still manage to get dings. Latest one of three separate damages inflicted by others is on the fuel door on DarthNX, happened just a week ago.

I appreciate your comprehensive list corradoMR2. I learned no. 7 the hard way many years ago. I had parked a long way from other cars, but unfortunately close to a storm drain vent I didn't notice. The lot pavement was gradually funneled down to this drain. The slope wasn't that noticeable until I returned. I can still remember the feeling of my stomach flipping from what I saw. It looked as though my car was a shopping cart magnet with 5 carts banged against it from front to back ... all having left large dings with scratches! The wind had sailed all lose carts down the slope crashing into my car. Ouch!!! ... talk about a lesson learned that day

Oh my, this is a nightmare. Which car?
Actually, it was 1993. I was still a GM person then with a white & silver metallic Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL
which, incidentally, had the floating roofline now coming back into vogue.

Notice my avatar monogram ... the large centered "L" could easily stand for Lexus rather than my surname. We'll never own anything else. I got a real kick when Akio said his middle name is now Lexus! ;)
I have another rule - I never park beside a two door car like a Camaro (especially in the wind) as those doors are so wide they're almost assured to hit.
I have to smile because this is familiar to me.
Last year I was in America (West coast), and saw many large car parks. Really, a lot wider than in Europe. My first thought: that's easy parking! But I had momentarily overlooked that the cars also are bigger / wider ...
I used to also find a place a little further away, until I got tired of it almost every time my (metal) valves were stolen. Just something closer parking where there is more movement, helped.

Good rule of thumb^.

Another thing to watch for is SUV's, because the rear doors will hit our sedans, coupes and hatchbacks up high which can cause expensive damage.
(Look at the shape of a SUV door as it wraps around the rear wheel, therefore the widest part of the door when open is very high up. No body side molding will protect where these doors tend to hit a conventional car and/or another SUV.)

Same with this. I almost never ever park next to another car, always in a spot that is ample space where I can hug the curb so the spot next to me is far away from the car or just in a spot where I'm fairly certain another car won't park. Also In the city, I have certain streets in every neighborhood that I know are solid for large spaces and well lighted etc. also I use the Robotic parking garage on any Saturday night or Friday night out near the bars. The garage is cheaper than the traditional garages and keeps the car completely safe. It works like this one, https://youtu.be/w3vtpGtyw1k
