The Lexus LF-CC Coupe Concept

Lexus has announced the LF-CC, a coupe concept that will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show at the end of this month — here’s a video from Lexus UK to get things started:

Combining elements of the LF-LC concept along with a dash of the production GS, the LF-CC is a clear indication that the next-generation IS will be available as a coupe, filling one of the largest gaps in the lineup.

Lexus LF-CC Coupe Concept

The LF-CC will also debut with an all-new 2.5L four-cylinder hybrid engine, which Lexus describes as such:

This powertrain will achieve class-leading energy efficiency, with more than 2 hp produced per gram of CO2.

This Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain features an all-new, ultra-smooth running, 2.5 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to a compact, high-output, water-cooled permanent magnet electric motor.

It adopts the Atkinson cycle and D-4S direct injection technology to optimise both the power and fuel-efficiency benefits of Lexus Hybrid Drive.

(Please note, although the press release describes the LF-CC as a mid-size coupe concept, it specifies that the production model would be in the D-Segment, the same classification as the Lexus IS. The Lexus GS is classified as a E-Segment car in Europe.)

I’m still going over the images, and will post a more detailed analysis later today — for now, here’s the full press release.

Update: The original video featured in this post has been set to private and no longer viewable — I’ve added a new video as a replacement.

Update 2: The original video is back.

World Premiere of the Lexus LF-CC Concept Car at the 2012 Paris Motor Show

  • LF-CC displays the latest evolution of the L-finesse design language and signature spindle grille, to be reflected in future Lexus D-Segment vehicles

* Announces the market launch of a mid-size coupe in the near future
  • Features a new 2.5 litre full hybrid powertrain with class-leading CO2 emissions, which will be introduced soon in the Lexus model range

Following the unveiling of Lexus’ award-winning hybrid 2+2 sports coupe concept, the LF-LC at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show and its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show, a new, mid-sized coupe concept, the LF-CC makes its World Premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.

The more compact, rear-wheel drive, full hybrid LF-CC already integrates various design cues from the LF-LC; a first illustration of how concept cars are truly influencing future Lexus models and, in this instance, future D-Segment derivatives.

Announcing the launch of a premium mid-sized coupe in the more accessible D-segment in the near future, the LF-CC reinforces Lexus’ commitment to create more engaging, inspirational vehicles through attractive design, a superior driving experience and advanced technologies.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The LF-CC showcases the latest evolution of the company’s unique L-finesse design language, with the boldest yet interpretation of the signature Lexus ‘spindle’ grille. Framed by the bonnet lip, deep lower spoiler and powerfully projecting front fender tips, the grille mesh is encased in a deep, metal- finish surround and takes on a pronounced, 3D form.

A unique, 3 LED-projector headlamp design is housed in the narrow gap between the lower and upper fender surfaces, without a conventional, one-piece cover. Independent Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) are fully integrated into the upper bumper surface to complete this unique new design.

The broad lower fenders are aerodynamically sculpted to manage the flow of air to the engine bay and front brakes, whilst reinforcing the powerful, dynamic road presence of the new Lexus signature frontal design.

In profile, the powerful convex curve of the bonnet flows seamlessly through a steeply raked windscreen into a roofline which deliberately peaks towards the rear of the cabin to emphasise the traction available from the vehicle’s rear-wheel drive powertrain.

The bodywork is stretched tight between the front and rear fenders, and the rear fender is less pronounced than that of the front, reinforcing the concentration of vehicle weight over the driven wheels for maximum traction.

Further developing a design form initiated on the LF-LC concept and the high-performance LFA, the sharply sculpted form of an airflow regulating fin flows from underneath the side of the car and upwards through the rear wheel arch. This aerodynamic detail is designed to increase downforce over the driven wheels, further improving traction.

The airflow regulating fin merges with the falling roofline in a pronounced rear spoiler integrated within the boot lid, seamlessly fusing design and aerodynamic elements to give the vehicle its distinctive, coupe proportions.

To the rear, the full width bumper flows into the rear wheel arches to emphasise the LF-CC’s broad, powerful stance. Lexus-characteristic L-shaped combination lamps feature a layered, strongly three- dimensional design, and the lower, concave bumper section incorporates a full width spoiler to further enhance rear-wheel drive traction. The rear stop lamp is nicely integrated into the shark antenna.

The LF-CC is finished in a new, ‘Fluid Titanium’ exterior colour, a metallic finish with exceptionally high brilliance which combines sharp, bright highlighting with dark shaded surfaces to reinforce the powerful forms of the bodywork’s sculpted surfaces.

INTERIOR DESIGN

The LF-CC’s interior hints at the progressive luxury of a future Lexus model cabin layout, and represents a further development of the company’s HMI (Human Machine Interface) design philosophy.

The dashboard is divided into two distinct zones: an upper, Display Zone, with a multi-display screen located at an ideal distance for at-a-glance viewing, and a lower, Operation Zone, which allows access to the uniquely designed shift lever and an innovative touch tracer display for remote system control.

This clear division of zones creates a unique fusion of an airy, spacious cabin and a sporting cockpit which places the emphasis on a snug, highly focused driving environment. All functional driving components are consolidated in the driver’s seat surroundings, combining outstanding ergonomics with advanced HMI technologies.
The driver benefits from a low, highly focused driving position with a sporting, wide grip steering wheel, optimum pedal placement and high-visibility instrument dials. The touch tracer display for remote system control is located directly behind the shift lever for maximum comfort and ease of operation.

Coordinating with the ‘Fluid Titanium’ exterior colour, the seats, door panels and instrument binnacle hood are trimmed in a warm, elegant amber leather finish. The extensive use of metallic finishes and soft touch materials throughout reinforces the premium quality of the environment. The contrast between the exterior and interior colour schemes gives the car an elegant yet simultaneously sporting image.

ALL-NEW 2.5 LITRE FULL HYBRID POWERTRAIN

Representing a new Lexus powertrain for future production, the LF-CC is equipped with an all-new, highly efficient, 2.5 litre full hybrid powertrain delivering a combination of the engaging performance appropriate to a sporting, D-segment coupe and low CO2 emissions, targeted below 100 g/km.

In addition to the petrol engine and electric motor, the LF-CC hybrid drive system further comprises a generator, a high-performance battery, a power split device which, via planetary reduction gears, combines and re-allocates power from the engine, electric motor and generator according to operational requirements, and a compact power control unit to govern the high speed interaction of the system components.

Adapted specifically for the hybrid powertrain, the all-new 2.5 litre, DOHC, 4-cylinder petrol engine benefits from several technical improvements. It adopts the Atkinson cycle and D-4S direct injection technology to optimise both the power and fuel-efficiency benefits of Lexus Hybrid Drive.

Lexus will introduce this new hybrid powertrain into its model range in the near future.

Lexus at the 2012 Paris Motor Show

Besides the world premiere of the new LF-CC, Lexus will also display the all-new LS 600h F SPORT in Western European premiere. The new LS flagship sedan reflects the bolder Lexus exterior and interior design direction, and brings enhanced driving dynamics, world-leading refinement, luxury and innovative advanced technology.

Introduced by Paul Van der Burgh, Director Lexus Europe, the Lexus Press Conference will be held at 8.45 AM CET on September 27 (hall 4, stand 120).

I doubt there will be a coupe, though. The concept for the current IS was a roadster, remember. This is probably very much how the IS-sedan will look! Great!

AND that's why there is a cabriolet version on now a days model with the coupe indication of the next generation this means there is definitely a coupe

No. It dont mean there definitely will be a coupe. The IS-C was based on the IS, and took nothing from the concept.

First thing to remember, as this is a UK press release, is that Toyota / Lexus does not sell a car here with the 2.5liter 4cylinder motor currently for sale in America in the Camry hybrid / ES300h.  This is almost certainly the same drive train I would have thought. Over 2bhp per gram of CO2 also fits.  Drive train has 200bhp and the car will emit less than 100g CO2 (in the IS anyways, it will probably be slightly higher in the heavier GS300h due later). You have to wonder how many CT sales the IS300h will take, though I would imagine it will be quite a bit more up market. I hope we do see an IS coupe.

It will be the Camry Hybrid powertrain but outfitted with D4-S. So it will produce a little more horsepower. The atkinson 2GR gains about 40hp when going from port injection to D4-S. So the 2AR will gain about 25hp. So this whole system will be around 225hp.

50% of us were wrong in the prediction (where's the CUV?) - Lexus really knows how to keep things under wraps.  Regardless, what a beauty this is! Detune the front and rear lights like was done with the GS concept a year ago and here's the production IS!  Wow.

Pure sex.  Lexus really knows how to make a stunning design statement.  The only two reservations I have are 1) the grille is still way over the top, not sure if we are ready for it, and 2) the side mirrors are a bit too prissy, hope they will be toned down some.  I assume men are targeted as consumers of this car?

Great design, but very uninspiring drivetrain. The drivetrain seems to be pretty much the same that is being used in the ES300 or the Camry. Ridiculous choice of powertrain. Despite being a coupe, it will not grab many buyers with a drivetrain like that for a car with sporting aspirations.

Remember that this will not actually come in production as a coupe. This is just the design-language of the new IS. It's not a sports car per se, but a competitor to the diesel engined BMWs and Audis of Europe. 200+ Hp is really good for an everyday car that doesnt guzzle gas. Besides, there will be other engine choices. Both the 2,5V6 and the 3,5V6 we have today and probably a 5.0 V8 also.

This is the only Spindle Grilled car that looks good and not an after thought/"forced" front end when the rest of the body wasn't designed to flow with it like the GS, LS and RX. As good as this car looks, Toyota always manages to screw something up. Why put a weak powertrain on a car as muscular as this? I don't understand it. I'd be all over this car, but a hybrid? Give me a break Toyota. You guys only got the car's right in the 90's which were designed in the late 80's. Where is that Toyota now? Did they all leave to go work at Hyundai? Now you have crap looking exterior with good power, and good looking exterior with weak power.

There will be more powertrains than just this 2.5L hybrid engine -- I fully expect both the 2.5L V6 & the 3.5L V6 to be carried over from the current IS.

How were all the Lexus cars "in the '90's" designed in the late '80s? The only Lexus models that were mostly designed then were the original pre-facelift LS400(sold 1989-1992), the 1992 ES & SC, and '93 GS. Did subsequent versions(i.e. 1995 LS) of each model not exist? Outside of those four models, every other Lexus released prior to 2000 was generally designed up until 1996, so I don't get your point. Lexus most certainly wouldn't release then-new late '90's vehicles like the RX, IS200, 2GS, and LX470 that had 10 year old designs from the late '80's. Not even the LFA's exterior design is 10 years old. They are doing fine with the spindle grille and many should sensibly remember that this is a production-inspired concept. Therefore, the production IS was designed before it as was the '13 GS before the LF-Gh and these only exist(ed) as previews that exaggerate the design cues of their production variants.

Front look is amazing in fact, It's damn great ! then it's unfortunately not so good ...the rear looks... at least at the picture and at least for me more like laguna coupe.. or lancia coupe... It seems that no one known what to do with it, tried to combine two: new gs with some new idea which I do not really understand. Inside receipe was already done and ready to implement = steering wheel from GS + some LFA alike dashboard + some glossy control spaces which seems to be obvious for concepts nowdays.. Hope they will not give up with V6 engines and finally introduce 3,5 for europe in this segment.

The Laguna coupe's rear looks damn good, so that's not a bad thing at all. Dont know what Lancia "coupe" you're talking about, but Lancia are famous for making really good looking cars, so I guess that's not a bad thing either. This concept looks amazing. The interior will be totally different.
