2013 Lexus GS Automatic Trunk Closer

While attending the ES preview event in Oregon last month, I was surprised to find out that the U.S. version of the 2013 Lexus GS doesn’t include the powered trunk — it’s a rare occurrence to see Canadian vehicles equipped with an option unavailable to Americans, especially one this useful.

(No word of a lie, this is my wife’s favorite feature.)

    The lack of this feature frustrates me almost as much as no sunglass holder. What makes it worse is that it seems Lexus used the cheapest hinge system they could get away with. Opening the trunk lid reminds me of my wife’s old Ford Taurus company car. I recently rented a VW Jetta, which was a pretty crappy car, but at least VW used gas struts on the trunk hinges (which are the same type as on the GS) to keep the lid from bouncing when it swings all the way up. The struts also helped it stay open in strong winds. I miss the hinge system on my LS 430.

    Yeah, no sunglasses holder is a tough one — I clip them on the side of my visor, but it’s a poor substitute.
