Motor Trend Comparison: Lexus GX 460 vs. Mercedes GL 450 vs. Land Rover LR4

Motor Trend has a new luxury off-road comparison featuring the Lexus GX 460 against the Land Rover LR4 and Mercedes GL 450:

The GX ends up finishing second behind the LR4, and was well-received by the Motor Trend writers, especially in terms of value — however, they deducted points for its low tow rating (6,500lbs) and the lack of cargo space.

There is a full text review as well, along with a very nice photo gallery — which included this shot:

Crazy!

I would be completely sold on the LR4 if it weren't for Land Rover's infamous reliability. Not a single part of its interior looks weak, and the leather on top of the dash is a nice finishing touch. The GX... seems compromised. poor GL... the vehicle is pretty big even though it looks small. I know that's the intention, but I hate how it feels extremely tight on the inside - hate the weird, bulky, and stubby seats. The dashboard is meh; I would compliment on the leather, but that's only because it is more in the LX's segment.

Now why was the RX lashed for being revolutionary (yet still different enough IMO), but nobody mentioned that the LR4 looks EXACTLY like the LR3? lol

@Josh: you mean evolutionary? lol That's because the new RX didn't look that good in the first few pictures; the second-generation RX looked great but was in dire need of a new face. Now that I've seen many third-generation RX in person, I think it looks great. I believe the video did mention about the LR4 being the newer version of the LR3. Many people know that, and well... Land Rovers have great timeless appeal, and the improved LR4 interior is just irresistible. Just look at how fresh the LR4 looks despite having a 5-year-old design.

I see very little difference between the LR3 & LR4, except for the interior upgrade. I don't really care for its side profile, it's very plain.

and since most people DO NOT do severe off-road driving in these SUV's, I think the GX460 should have rated higher, maybe a "tie" for 1st. The LR4 has an unimpressive interior compared to the Lexus, and like World Of Luxury said, the Land Rovers have a HORRIBLE record of reliability. That, and the lack of a "new style" would seem to hurt its overall appeal. The Mercedes is an overpriced luxury MiniVan.

IMO, the MB lacks a lot of things to make it off-road worthy and it doesn't look stable from what was shown in the comparison. On the other hand, Toyota makes some great SUVs and it shows in the FJ Cruiser, the LC and LX, and the 4Runner and GX. Light lexujoe stated, not a lot of Luxury SUV owners will not take their SUV off-road.

uh i would think that the ML would be in the same class as these cars.... not the GL which is more like the LX or Range Rover.... right?
