Lexus CT 200h Targets Audi A3 Rival

Lexus CT 200h targets Audi A3 in Europe

More information about the Lexus CT 200h has emerged from its Geneva debut—according to Car Dealer Magazine and Just Auto, Lexus surveyed customers across Europe, including drivers in Germany, France and Italy, and the Audi A3 emerged as the benchmark, with Europeans preferring it over the BMW 1-series. Considering this, the CT 200h was designed with the A3 firmly in its crosshairs, and “more emphasis on sportiness in the engineering process”.

According to chief engineer Osamu Sadakata, “This car is our understanding of what Europe wants.”

The CT advance surveys hearkens back to the original LS development program, which also began with extensive customer research of luxury sedan buyers in the U.S., only this time it’s the opposite side of the autmotive market, with CT 200h expected to attract younger buyers to the Lexus brand.

  1. At least it is not quite as dull looking as the A3 (the most boring “premium” compact car ever), unless there will be a basic version without fog lights, alloy wheels, body kit etc.

  2. Alloy weals will be standard feature wink I’m not sure about the fog lights though

  3. ...but is this what the US consumers wants…?

  4. Josh:...but is this what the US consumers wants…?

I guess we’ll find out soon enough—I’d say this is the perfect car for Lexus in Canada, though. Might even buy one myself.

  5. Americans do not like compact cars. They like gas guzzers cars. They do not like Hybrids that is why they are trying their best to kill Prius.

  7. wow

now we have this as A3 / 1 series rival

and waiting for IS sc & GS sc to be rivals for A4/C Class/3 Series estates and A6/E class/5 Series estates

now i just can admit lexus began to see europe but wait

    still the Diesel & Manual

please lexus make a diesel hybrid with manual gear

  8. Please no more diesels in Lexus - it doesn’t fit with Lexus values like refinement and silence. And a manual diesel? No, diesel’s narrow rev range is much better for an automatic box. I think the IS220d was a mistake. Let PSA do the diesel hybrids…

  9. Well this American wants a compact luxury hybrid…I can’t wait.  I just hope it at least equals the Prius in MPG or it’s going to be a dissapointment.

Actually there are Americans who love hybrids. Hybrids have been around for decades starting with the Honda and Toyota, and it continues to grow. American automakers also going hybrid too (Ford Fusion Hybrid, GMC Sierra Hybrid, etc). Even BMW is coming out with hybrids too, namely ActiveHybrids.

Agree on the MPG equivalent of Prius. If priced right, I would buy one too. This car looks even in person. Pictures are flat and don’t show the true depth.

It may not equal the Prius in MPG, but I bet it’s going to be real close. I’m expecting something close to 45MPG.

  13. @seal: Love that there’s a tachometer, too bad there’s no paddle-shifts.

  14. I hope there will be a wood choice for the interior because I do not like interiors that don’t have any wood.

    wink!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. @Eddie: WHOA! Dang I just want to slap on the chrome frame for the side windows from the concept! and maybe chrome around the foglights to balance the look!

  17. @Eddie:

    wow

    i like it

  18. @Eddie: Very nice!

  19. ENOUGH OF THIS LITTLE DUDE ALREADY!

I read on AutoBlog (who actually sourced an article from this site today) that Daimler-Benz is finally getting rid of the Maybach brand and plans on expanding the S-class range. A new generation of the S-class and R-class will arrive in 2014.

    What is Lexus planning?!

I wonder if Lexus plans to maintain the same surface area of leather and wood in the next-generation LS. I wonder if Lexus thinks they’re too good to be competing with the A8 and XJ in terms of interior quality. (The 7-series has a lot of leather too, but the way BMW designed the interior makes the materials look nice on paper but rather dull in real life.)

  20. @WorldofLuxury: LOL, they took a ‘shrink ray’ and aimed it at the luxury market which is why all these small cars are coming out.

But referring to the LS, the CTh’s chief engineer was the ‘LS chief engineer’ from 2007 onwards.  I found this interesting as he succeeded the chief engineer who headed the development effort for the current LS.  I wonder what he’s up to—maybe working on the fifth gen? cool

  21. @Dan: I’m really hoping for a creative guy - a more apparent rather than subtle creativity is what I like.

  22. I can’t wait for the new LS.

  23. @seal:

Thanks for the price info link.  That comes to about $28,000 USD.  Not too bad for the base price imho.

  24. I want to see this car as a 3-door coupe, like I heard they were spinning off.  I’m still not crazy about a hatchback, but if it was smaller and sportier - to replace my ‘92 SC300, I’d be very interested.  My next car will definitely be a hybrid, but I still want a luxury vehicle.

  25. I’m really excited about this car! I just sold my Lexus and I was thinking about a BMW (1-serie) to replace it, because my Lexus was a bit too big. But it’s definitely going to be the CT200, what took them so long? Pity that I have to wait until 2011, but I guess it’s worth waiting for…

I know—I’ve put off my own car purchase waiting for the CT, though I’m more and more tempted by used GS 450hs the longer I wait. smile
