A Note on the Recent Toyota Recall
In order to head off the emails I’ve been receiving over the last couple days regarding Toyota’s recent accelerator pedal recall—it is important to note that this is strictly a Toyota issue and does not affect any Lexus car or SUV.
There was a Lexus ES 350 & IS 250/350 recall announced in December regarding the gas pedal design, but these are two separate recalls and are unrelated.

Thx for the notice, hopefully that will get the word out to some confused owners; the media circus hasn’t helped much. And to clarify, the official NHTSA investigation, along with the official Sheriff report, found that unsecured floor mats were indeed a primary cause of pedal entrapment, which is why the earlier recall to replace the mats, reshape pedal, and add brake override was issued. The latest Toyota recall for defect pedal parts has nothing to do with Lexus because those parts are not used in any Lexus car.
I know for sure that one problem was a dealer’s mistake; some others… I don’t know. It makes sense to say that Lexus vehicles don’t have some of the problems because they are mostly supplied by Denso, but we don’t even know what the problem is. I kinda feel guilty because the casualties that occurred quite awhile ago helped me I earn quite a fortune. (Learning that Ford ended its bailout terms also helped me quite a bit.)
Poor Akio Toyoda. He just got here, and it appears to me that his predecessor has shown how selfishness can be very harmful for the long-term. I think his direction towards small, sporty cars (FT-86) might help keep Toyota alive by bringing back the young enthusiast while the recall story continues to spread within the American population.
Lexus deserves to have doubts in the public, even doubts that are inaccurate. Hopefully, that’ll really teach Toyota a lesson and provide us with great Lexus vehicles in the future rather than just “good.”
I do feel bad for Mr. Toyoda. Hopefully, he’ll get us back to the Toyota Way. But the media has blown this way out of proportion. They didn’t do this with Ford’s Cruise Control problem, now which Ford has a proper fix after 2 decades, Honda’s air bag issues and now they’re taking a closer look at the Chevy Cobalt for power steering issue.
I am a passionate owner of a Lexus and my family has always been some TOYOTA since I can remember. And I’m very angry, seeing as mismanagement of a few years has managed to sink the well-deserved fame, in the best cases, it may take another 20 years to recover it. And watching the stock shares on Wall Street lossing 14% in one week, no surprise that this could lead to bankruptcy shortly to TOYOTA.
I could see Toyota pulling out of the US market and just focus on Lexus. But it really depends on how bad new and current customer see Toyota. It’s funny Jose, because I said the same thing. It could take Toyota 2 decades to go back to what it original was and follow what made Toyota, Toyota up to this point. But I don’t see it taking 2 decade. With the new Toyoda at the helm, he could bring Toyota back to what it was. He did said that Toyota lost it way. This could be his opportunity to align Toyota back to its original mission.
@emptystreets130: Toyota leaving the US market? Are you kidding?
@Brendan: Yes I am kidding. Toyota would never pull out. But then again, you have to look at the bigger picture. It could be possible. Some automakers have done so in the past. Given how stupid the media is these days…..
so sad for toyota
they ‘ll have a great great way
and a lot of tasks to do to came back with their old reputation
first sports car
second reliable car
third great designs
forth a much more bench mark environmental technology
Hey ahm, I dont see it taking 20 years. How I view this, its just a roadblock, a really major roadblock but nothing to cause Toyota to collapse. They will CERTAINLY learn from their mistake(s). I STILL believe TOYOTA is a reliable as cars can be. My Camry, I says she is as reliable as the sun, that car NEVER hesitates to start & move even when she’s limping. I know also that TOYOTA will lose some customers but at the same time, they have a real ‘fan base’ & there are persons just waiting for production to restart for them to shell out their chedda:-)
@Lexus Dreams: Correct me if I’m wrong, but were you the commenter who in one of your comments left a link to a Lexus dealer website? Are you a Toyota or Lexus salesmen or someone affiliated with the company in any sort of way?
I apologize if I’ve made a mistake, but I’m pretty certain you are/were an advertiser for a Lexus dealer. Anyways, I believe I am right in saying that Toyota initially tried their best to hide their flaws - they’re advertising that they chose to recall all vehicles and halt sales, but the NHTSA got in the way (I know; I’m surprised too). Boy, there is just so much to say, but I’m tired.
