Lexus L-Select Customization Video
This video gives some detail on the new L-Select customization program currently offered with the Lexus LS in Japan (warning: the accompanying music is unique):
If switching internal LS components is as easy as it’s displayed in this video, I don’t see any reason why L-Select couldn’t make it’s way to other markets. More likely, this is a pilot program to determine consumer interest and decisions will be made based on its success in Japan.

Some of those things aren’t that easy to change in real life. The seat cushion is a definite example. There’s an airbag in that seat, in addition to heating & ventilation which make it much more complicated to work on. Anyone that could change a seat cushion in that seat in the vehicle is my hero. I’m quite certain it is literally impossible.
On another note, this is awesome Lexus is getting into customization. If I was going to spend 60-70 large on a vehicle, I would want it EXACTLY as I want it - not the pre-packaged IDENTICAL vehicles currently on dealer lots. Its ok to wait a month or two when you’re spending that kind of money to get the vehicle you want. The only things you generally find different from vehicle to vehicle on dealer lots is color (which rarely actually IS a color) or with or without navigation.
Neat color combos, strange music (unique indeed).
Bring this to the US!
LOL at the music! Does the front passenger headrest collapse if someone is sitting in it. I hope it would for fun but also because people might be putting heavy business stuff there.
I like how the Japanese get that ottoman without being forced to ordering a vehicle with only 4 seats, and I also like how they don’t have to raise their heads to view the screen in the back (helpful when sitting upright).
Btw, how strong are those seats to retain a handlebar? I feel like I’d break’em after using the handlebars many times to get out and in the vehicle - I suppose most Japanese aren’t that heavy, and even if some rich guys had some extra weight, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be from muscles.
Working in the media industry that video was pathetic for a major luxury car brand. I think a child could have done a better job.
I did like seeing a lot of the different combination one can get. Hope they bring this to the US. Do you think it will be for all models or only for the LS.
Honestly they should have this in the US. This would be a great program to have. Plus instead of just having it on the LS add it to the LX.
Yeah. I always feel like that the LX is one of its most expensive model - a vehicle that should be treated as if it were in the ultra-luxury category. If we removed the hybrid system in the LS 600h L, the LX would redeem itself as the most expensive Lexus.
Hmm… the cargo area and headliner of the LX can certainly get some help with more details, such as stitching, chrome, and maybe even leather.

The music of that video is really SICK, made me wanna throw up(luckily I didn’t). Japanese music can be really bad, (for eg music from the movie Fast and the Furious- Tokyo Drift)
2 LFAaddict : What happened to your keyboard?
You’re right, WoL. The cargo area in the LX has too much hard plastic & too little carpeting & that 3rd row seat is an eye sore. The LX is definitely not anywhere near the league of the LS no matter what it’s price.
i spilled water on it and at the time i wrote that message i hit space and it reloaded the page. everything is fine now but trying to make a question mark appear is almost impossible..also, if i use the shift button the right side to shift a letter on that row, nothing happens, making me have to use the other shift button.
I have a solution to your problem - Get a new keyboard !
problem with that, my good man, is that i have a laptop…
There must be something we can do… aha
Should have responded this last week, I doubt the video was official—it looks like someone attended a L-Select demonstration and took some photos.
Almost six months since I reviewed the LX, and I’ve only just realized how bad the third-row seating is. I’m currently driving a Toyota Highlander, and that last row of seating is actually functional, instead of having your knees up by your ears in the LX.
One of the best decisions with the new GX is the improved third row, especially with them folding into the floor.
You could remap the ? to a key that still works—take a look here:

If I remember correctly, the front-passenger headrest tilts first before it folds up.
(Also, I’m pretty sure it’s now possible to order the Executive package with five seats in the US.)
If the L-Select program takes off, I would also like to see it move to the LX next, followed by the GS & ES.
oh thats cool i didn’t know that. thanks for the concern, luckily everything is working fine now
Whoops, forgot that you were usin a lap. They should make these thing waterproof ! Have you tried using a hairdryer on it
To be honest I don’t really like the color options Lexus offers with L-Select, they look like something an aftermarket leather fitter would do with so many clashing color combos. The options for the LFA are much better & more becoming of a luxury brand. I’m content with the interior colors Lexus currently offers & I wouldn’t pay extra for L-Select just for the sake of being different. What I really like are the custom options offered by Porsche & Aston (Try their website configurators, Wow). Porsche will even trim the inside RVM with interior color matching leather ! When it comes to customisation the Germans do it best & Lexus would do well to learn from them.
AutoSpies just posted some real life pictures of the facelifted LS, LSh, and LS Sport.
My Two Points:
- I love the extra larger area of wood below the Nav, which is very evident in the LS Sport’s matte wood trim.
- The LSh’s grille isn’t bad; however…
- The chrome on top of the grille gives the grille an awkward appearance since the thickness of the three bars get thinner as they ascend, but at least the chrome is thinner on top - not wiry, thank god. Anyways, what wasn’t apparent at first were the chrome inserts between the bars on the grille, which really balance out the overall appearance. The LSh is still my favorite in the LS lineup.
Btw, there are also a couple pictures of the ES in the LS facelift gallery on AutoSpies. The foglights are okay although a shorter height and a sharper arrowhead appearance would be a lot better. Also, the lower grille is okay, and there are some strong lines and curves in the lower fascia that aren’t very noticeable. That and the sharper grille with the flatter front bumper really add some sophistication to the vehicle’s appearance. Still think the pre-facelift was better…
thanks for the info, can you provide a link?

Forget this car! I think I’ve found my LS 400 replacement - the new Audi A8!
The interior of the LS just isn’t that warm and welcoming, but neither is the new A8, but the new A8 is just awesome, cool, exquisite, and beautiful. I realize that the front looks a bit droopy, but the “live” pictures suggest otherwise.
Hopefully there will be an A8L for me! The interior is just… wow… the interior lighting, the attention to detail in the roof, the nice Bang & Olufsen speakers, the optional all-around leather trim with suede touches (LS 460 only has leather on seats, certain parts of the center console, and some “major” parts of the doors.)... they even made the push button gear shifter look cool! ...and…and… there’s just so much to compliment! They even paid a reasonable amount of attention to the ceiling and the seat backs. I do, however, question how annoying it would be that the cool gear shifter gets in the way of Audi’s MMI system. Hopefully, the wood on the dash doesn’t reflect all the California sunlight into the driver’s eyes.
I realize that some of the materials used on the interior are questionable - most notably, the quality of the leather and plastic parts, but at least everything looks WOOOWOOWOWOWOWOOWWW!!! Man the rear center console is WOW. The wood the extends from the front center console and back around the rear AC vents is WOW - most and only beautiful AC vents behind the front center console. WOW!
Even though, overall, the interior is not as groundbreaking as its predecessor’s, the interior is so beautiful that I don’t care if the vehicle has quality issues - I’d wanna learn how to handle all its stupid gadgets and spend a whole day cleaning ever inch of the car! No LS 460L or even the LS 600h L for me! My LX 470 is gonna have to deal with its future stablemate, the all-new 2012 Audi A8L! (not ‘11 to hopefully get around the initial new vehicle glitches.)
@WorldofLuxury: As much as I hate Audi, I must admit the new A8 has a great interior, makes the LS look like a Corolla !
But the exterior looks too much like an A4, not a good thing & why are they obsessed with C-pillar windows, so outdated.
WoL, would’nt it be better if you gave your money to Lexus, but just a suggestion
@LEXUSBOY: I wish Lexus had an official program for that. As a start, all Lexus needs to look into is the new Range Rover’s interior. Leather and stitches all over the place, even the ceiling and the handlebars on the ceiling. The wood is nice and sturdy…
